Refrigerator Water Filters

                                    Refrigerator Water Filters

Most people don’t think about the water or ice that comes out of their refrigerator.  They assume that the refrigerator is designed to provide clean water and ice.

You can see the water filter every time you open the refrigerator door with some refrigerators.  One just assumes it is doing the job as it blends in with the food stored in the compartments.

Water filters are designed to remove certain impurities and substances from your water supply, in addition to the already “clean” water supplied through your water system from your municipality.  If you get your water from a well or spring, the refrigerator water filter may be part of a larger filtration system that helps remove contaminants before you get water or ice from your refrigerator.

                     Changing the Refrigerator Water Filter

Some people avoid changing the refrigerator water filter because they are unsure of how to do it. (>>>Directions) For most refrigerators, it is a relatively easy task.  Instructions are in the refrigerator manual as well on the water filter/package.  It usually only takes several minutes.

The refrigerator water filter must be changed according to the manufacturer’s instructions in order for you to continue to get filtered water.  Some manufacturers suggest changing the filter every six months. Some refrigerators have a time indicator light to remind you when to change the water filter.

Other factors can influence the change frequency of the water filter.  For example, if you have a water filter on your kitchen water faucet, and you get most of your drinking and cooking water from that source, the refrigerator water filter should last longer.  However, if the refrigerator water dispenser is your only source for drinking and cooking water, the filter may need to be changed more frequently.

In addition, family size and water consumption rates can affect the change frequency, e.g., you may consume more water during warm/hot months.  Also, the prefiltered water quality may be poor, necessitating a more frequent water filter change.

If your water supply system contains more contaminates, you may have to change your filter more often.  Sometimes a saturated “dirty” filter can accumulate contaminates and pass these substances into the ice maker or water dispenser.

Refrigerator water filters can vary in price--a lot!
